Maryam Bayam is a Malaysian based brand with a focus in making fun and contemporary clothing and accessories out of Malaysian batik sourced from Terengganu. It was founded by Maryam Mutalib who came from a small town of Kampung Chalet in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. While she is a chef by training, she pivoted to fashion after working in the cooking industry for a few years.
Why did you name your brand 'Maryam Bayam'?
Maryam Bayam was a nickname of mine in highschool. When it came to naming the brand, I wanted something fun and funky that represents the batik and accessories that I was making and Maryam Bayam became a perfect fit. It also sounds pretty catchy and with the tagline, ‘Better in Batik’, it all came together perfectly.

How has the brand changed since you first started?
I am grateful for the support and love I have gotten from my customers and everyone around me. I also appreciate the feedback that I get about my products. Since Malaysian batik is eclectic, there are endless possibilities as to what I can make with it since the colors are so vibrant and batik is very diverse and versatile.
I was certain that if I enjoyed making these kinds of products, there would be people who are going to appreciate them as well. So, be passionate in what you do and do it well.
Moreover, there is a demand for batik based products and I am surprised by the positive reaction we got from the products that we have released. Even if it is something as small as a hair scrunchie, people would still want to buy our products.
What is the best part about managing your brand?
Being able to do what I love while having the support of my friends and family. As I mentioned, every feedback we receive will help to create better products for our customers. With Maryam Bayam, I was also able to meet a lot of interesting people that inspire me and the work that I do.
What was an unexpected lesson you have learned from running your brand?
Never be afraid to take risks. When I started Maryam Bayam, I was not sure about the feedback that I was going to get and I started to explore into making other kinds of accessories. In the end, I went ahead with the products that I was interested in making because I was certain that if I enjoyed making these kinds of products, there would be people who are going to appreciate them as well. So, be passionate in what you do and do it well.
What do you hope to achieve with your brand?
I want the legacy of Malaysian batik to continue for generations to come. My end goal with Maryam Bayam is for batik to be embraced into our daily routine and daily wear for many years to come.
